How we rank universities & labs

The score measures public research output in robotics and the reach of the institution's open-source robotics code. It is not a measure of teaching or of any partnership with Robotics Center.

InputWeightHow it is measured
Papers70%Papers in the ICRA proceedings and at IROS published 2023–2025 with at least one author affiliated with the institution, counted in OpenAlex. Each count links to its OpenAlex query. RSS and CoRL are not included because OpenAlex does not index them completely.
GitHub stars30%Stars on public, non-fork repositories of the institution's official robotics-lab GitHub organisations (an organisation counts only when the lab's own website links to it or its profile states the affiliation), log scale.

Scoring. Each input is scaled 0–100 against the best entry in this category (log scale where noted) and combined with the weights above. Missing data scores 0 and is shown as n/a; nothing is estimated.

Sources. OpenAlex works API; GitHub REST API. Lab sub-units (BAIR, CSAIL, ETH RSL) cannot be counted separately in OpenAlex, so they appear under their university.

How we rank robotics companies

Only independent companies are ranked. Companies that are publicly listed or owned by another company are listed below without a rank, because their funding is not comparable. A company counts as independent unless a public source shows a listing or a parent company.

InputWeightHow it is measured
Disclosed rounds35%Financing rounds announced 2023–2025 in a press release or reputable outlet. Amounts are often undisclosed, so the count of rounds is scored rather than the total raised.
Robot lines on sale30%Distinct robot or hardware product lines offered for sale on the company's own product page.
GitHub stars35%Stars on public, non-fork repositories of the company's official GitHub organisation, log scale.

Scoring. Each input is scaled 0–100 against the best entry in this category (log scale where noted) and combined with the weights above. Missing data scores 0 and is shown as n/a; nothing is estimated.

Sources. Company press releases and newsrooms, stock-exchange filings and established press; company product pages; GitHub REST API. Paywalled aggregators are not used as sources. Disclosed funding and On Robotics Center (products in our store) are shown for context and are not scored.

How we rank model companies

The score (0–100) measures public, checkable evidence about a company's robot models. It does not measure private capability. A company that publishes no benchmark results and no weights can still have strong models. Every input is computed from the data on each company page, and every number there links to its source.

InputWeightHow it is measured
Published benchmarks35%For each scored benchmark, the company's best result divided by the best result any company has published, averaged over the benchmarks it reports. No published results scores 0. Results come only from the model's own paper, model card or the official benchmark leaderboard. Scored: LIBERO (4-suite average success, %); SimplerEnv Google Robot, visual matching (%); SimplerEnv Google Robot, variant aggregation (%); SimplerEnv WidowX / Bridge (%); CALVIN ABC→D (average length, 0–5); RoboArena (pairwise rating).
Open weights20%Share of the company's listed models whose weights the public can download.
Adoption20%GitHub stars on the company's most-starred official model repository, on a log scale relative to the most-starred repository in the list. Hugging Face downloads are shown on company pages but not scored, because gated repositories report zero.
Released models15%Number of publicly announced, named models, capped at 5.
Disclosed funding10%Disclosed funding in USD on a log scale from $10M to the largest figure in the list. Where only one round is reported in USD, that round is used. This input applies only to private startups and robot makers. For big-tech divisions, research labs and listed companies it is n/a, and its weight is shared across the other inputs in proportion.

Sources. arXiv papers and official model cards for benchmarks and parameters; official leaderboards (RoboArena); the GitHub and Hugging Face APIs for stars and downloads; company announcements and established press for funding. Missing values are shown as n/a, never estimated.

Updated 17 Oct 2026. Benchmark protocols differ between papers, for example in fine-tuning and number of trials, so small gaps between close scores are not meaningful.

How we rank robotics investors

The score counts publicly announced robotics financing rounds an investor took part in. It reflects public activity only: deals that were never announced, or that do not name the investor, are not counted, so it is not a measure of fund size or returns. Robotics means physical robots, robot hardware and AI built for robots; self-driving cars, drones and general AI companies are excluded.

InputWeightHow it is measured
Robotics rounds70%Rounds announced 2023–2025 that name the investor, each with a public announcement. Leading or co-leading a round counts 1.5×.
Companies30%Distinct robotics companies across those rounds.

Scoring. Each input is scaled 0–100 against the best entry in this category (log scale where noted) and combined with the weights above. Missing data scores 0 and is shown as n/a; nothing is estimated.

Sources. Startup and investor press releases and established press (including Chinese financial press for Chinese rounds). Paywalled aggregators were used at most to discover a deal, never as its source. Coverage of a 24-investor starting list is not exhaustive; corrections are welcome.
