What is a quasi-direct-drive (QDD) actuator?

A QDD actuator pairs a high-torque motor with a low-ratio planetary gearbox (typically 6:1–9:1) so the joint stays backdrivable and can sense torque without a dedicated sensor. It's the standard choice for legged robots, force-controlled arms, and exoskeletons.

Which joint motor is cheapest?

DAMIAO DM-J series (from roughly $140) and RobStride RS series (from roughly $160) are the most affordable capable QDD joints. CubeMars AK series is a well-supported mid-range option.
