MuJoCo: The Research-Standard Physics Engine for Contact-Rich Robotics
Sub-millisecond step times, analytical contact solvers, a differentiable JAX backend (MJX), and a curated zoo of calibrated robot models — MuJoCo has been the default choice for manipulation and dexterous-hand RL since 2012, and the 2021 open-source release has made it the most widely taught simulator in robot learning courses.
What is MuJoCo?
MuJoCo is short for Multi-Joint dynamics with Contact, a general-purpose physics engine created by Emo Todorov at the University of Washington in 2012, later acquired by Google DeepMind and released as fully open-source under the Apache 2.0 license in 2022. Where earlier engines such as ODE, Bullet, and PhysX approach contact through iterative velocity-level solvers, MuJoCo formulates contact as a convex optimization problem with soft and elastic variants, producing stable behavior at large step sizes and enabling first-order analytical derivatives through the dynamics.
That mathematical foundation is why MuJoCo has become the default simulator for contact-rich manipulation research. Dexterous-hand re-orientation policies, cloth and rope manipulation, bimanual teleoperation replay, and humanoid locomotion controllers are all areas where MuJoCo's soft-contact model and analytical Jacobians outperform engines that rely on penalty methods or LCP formulations. The introduction of MJX in 2023 extended those strengths to GPU-parallel training, letting the same MJCF model scale from a single-thread desktop experiment to 16,384 parallel environments on an H100.
For robotics teams, the practical value of MuJoCo is its combination of speed, reproducibility, and a minimal installation footprint. A fresh MuJoCo setup is a single pip install with no compile step, no CUDA toolchain, and no 40 GB Omniverse download. That makes it the natural choice for CI pipelines, paper-replication scripts, and classroom teaching material — and the reason that nearly every major RL library (Gymnasium, dm_control, Brax, Stable-Baselines3, Robosuite) ships with a first-class MuJoCo integration.
Installation Quickstart
A minimal MuJoCo installation takes under five minutes on any modern Linux, macOS, or Windows workstation. Install MuJoCo itself, pull the curated Menagerie repository for high-quality robot models, and confirm the viewer launches:

For RL training, add Gymnasium and Stable-Baselines3 (or any Gymnasium-compatible trainer). For GPU-parallel rollouts, install MJX, which is distributed as part of the main MuJoCo repository and runs on top of JAX:

On an RTX 4090 the Franka reach task trains to 95 percent success in under three minutes with 4,096 parallel MJX environments and PPO — a workflow that used to take an overnight run on 32 CPU cores.
Supported Robots and Tasks
Through the MuJoCo Menagerie and community-maintained XML repositories, MuJoCo has calibrated MJCF models for the most widely used research platforms in robotics. On the manipulation side, the Franka Research 3, Universal Robots UR5e and UR10e, Kuka iiwa14, and xArm series all ship with inertial properties, joint limits, and end-effector meshes tuned against vendor specifications. Dexterous-hand researchers use MuJoCo versions of the Allegro Hand, Shadow Hand E3M5, and the LEAP hand, typically attached to a Franka arm for full-body manipulation experiments.
The humanoid and legged-locomotion ecosystem on MuJoCo expanded rapidly in 2024–2025. Unitree's G1 and H1 humanoids, Go2 quadruped, Booster K1, and Boston Dynamics Spot all have Menagerie-hosted or community MJCFs, and the DeepMind-maintained humanoid benchmark provides a canonical CMU-skeleton biped for motion-tracking research. Bimanual manipulation is well-served by the ALOHA and ALOHA-2 MJCFs, which are the reference models for Stanford's ACT and Mobile ALOHA papers and ship with teleoperation replay support out of the box.
On the task side, the MuJoCo Playground, dm_control suite, and Gymnasium-Robotics provide hundreds of ready-to-train scenarios: reaching, pushing, pick-and-place, tool use, in-hand re-orientation, bipedal locomotion on flat and rough terrain, and long-horizon kitchen tasks. Robosuite layers a benchmark-oriented task interface on top, and CMU's Habitat and Stanford's LIBERO both provide MuJoCo-backed versions of their evaluation suites.
Benchmarks on MuJoCo
When reviewers ask "what is the baseline result on this simulator," MuJoCo has the deepest published track record. The DeepMind Control Suite remains the standard apples-to-apples test bed for continuous-control algorithms, with published numbers from every major SAC, TD3, and PPO paper. Manipulation researchers benchmark against LIBERO-130, Robosuite's 10-task standardized suite, and the Meta-World ML-10 and ML-45 sets; all three run natively on MuJoCo and provide per-task success rates and sample-efficiency curves. Humanoid-Bench, introduced in 2024, offers 27 tasks on the Unitree H1 and is explicitly designed around MuJoCo and MJX.
For dexterous manipulation, OpenAI's in-hand cube re-orientation task (the predecessor to the Dactyl policy) is the canonical benchmark, and it lives exclusively in MuJoCo. MimicGen, Robomimic, and the ALOHA low-cost-hardware paper all report numbers on MuJoCo versions of their respective task sets, which makes cross-paper comparisons straightforward.
Pros and Cons
Strengths. Accurate contact modeling with analytical derivatives, 2000+ Hz CPU stepping for small models, a differentiable MJX GPU backend, the permissive Apache 2.0 license, a single-command install, and the deepest collection of calibrated robot MJCFs in the field. The file format is human-readable XML, which makes version control, diffing, and programmatic scene generation straightforward.
Weaknesses. Rendering is functional but not photorealistic — if you need domain-randomized visual policies trained against RGB inputs, Isaac Sim produces substantially better images. Sensor models are minimalist (no built-in LiDAR or depth-camera physics), and large scenes with thousands of meshes can slow below Isaac Sim's GPU PhysX solver. ROS 2 integration exists via community packages but is not first-class the way it is in Isaac Sim or Gazebo.
When to Pick MuJoCo
Choose MuJoCo when your experiments are contact-rich and CPU-bound, when reproducibility and paper-replication matter, or when you need differentiable dynamics for model-based RL. It is the right default for manipulation research, dexterous hands, bimanual teleoperation, humanoid motion capture replay, and any workflow where installation simplicity and license permissiveness are first-order concerns. For GPU-parallel humanoid locomotion with thousands of envs, MJX closes most of the gap with Isaac Lab while keeping the MuJoCo authoring ergonomics.
Pick Isaac Sim instead when photorealistic rendering, USD-based scene composition, or tight ROS 2 integration is the bottleneck. Pick Isaac Lab when you specifically want a GPU-parallelized RL framework built on PhysX.
